A popular drug in the South Florida community, the erectile dysfunction (ED) medication Viagra, has been discontinued by the manufacturer, but there are still many men interested in using it.
The cost of Viagra is around $1,300 for a supply, while Cialis costs about $15,000 for a supply, according to the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer Inc.
While the cost is relatively low, some men may consider cost savings a factor, especially if they are considering buying other medications.
“I don’t use Viagra at all, but I really like Cialis. It’s a really good option for me for going for the convenience and the speed,” said Mike Lee, a 52-year-old Florida man who is a patient with Viagra.
Lee has a history of heart issues, high blood pressure and diabetes, and he has had to take medication to treat both issues, but it’s not uncommon for men who use Viagra to try other options, including erectile dysfunction.
Viagra’s generic form, sildenafil, is the same as its brand-name counterpart, tadalafil. Viagra is available in generic form, with tadalafil costing about $20 for a supply at most drugstores.
“What’s interesting to me is that Cialis is so fast-acting, it is like the chemical in Viagra is just absorbed,” Lee said.
Viagra comes in four different strengths: 25mg, 50mg, 100mg and 100mg, and it is the only drug that is available that has an FDA-approved active ingredient called. It is effective for up to 36 hours and should be taken as needed, Lee said.
In most men, the recommended starting dose is 50mg, while a low-dose of 10mg is used for pulmonary arterial hypertension, Lee said.
Although Viagra has been discontinued by the manufacturer, the medication was still being tested for safety and effectiveness.
Lee said a separate company is developing a generic version of Viagra that is as good as the original.
“The company we’ve been testing is hoping for a generic that we can produce and they can take advantage of that,” Lee said.
The company is testing a version called sildenafil, in combination with tadalafil, which is available in 10mg and 20mg doses.
When that is marketed, it is known as Viagra Connect, while the generic form of Cialis is known as Levitra.
If men use Viagra Connect that has been discontinued, Lee said, the drug will still be available at drugstores, pharmacies and health food stores.
The generic form of Cialis is also available in the same strength as the brand-name drug.
“It’s not as if there’s a generic on the market, but when I first got to thinking about it, I didn’t know much about it,” said Lee.
The ED medication is available in more than 70 other drugs, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and natural health products, so it is important to have a prescription when using the medication.
The most common side effects are headache, facial flushing and indigestion, Lee said.

When a man takes the drug, the effects can last for up to 36 hours, Lee said.
Some men may also experience hearing issues, which are sometimes referred to as tinnitus, Lee said.
In rare cases, men have reported seizures, dizziness and drowsiness, Lee said.
There have also been reports of priapism (a long-lasting painful erection that lasts more than four hours), which can be fatal, and prolonged and painful urination, which can be painful and may lead to bleeding.
Lee said men should not use Viagra if they have ever had an allergic reaction to sildenafil or any other ingredient in Viagra.
“If you do get a rash, runny nose, stuffy nose, get the feeling of a headache, or stuffy nose and you can’t control it, it can cause a seizure and you can’t drink, you need to have an emergency medical care plan,” Lee said.
